Second Republican Senator Sides with Democrats on Impeachment Witnesses

As the question and answer period wind down at the impeachment trial, Democrats appear to be closer than ever to getting their wish.

Senator Susan Collins (R-ME) now seems ready to vote with Democrats on calling more witnesses at the trial.

Siding with Democrats

Moderate and anti-Trump Republicans may finally give the Democrats what they want during this impeachment… more witnesses.

Few would now disagree the House did not do its job during this process.

The House is tasked with conducting a thorough investigation, no matter how long it lasts.

They chose not to do this and rather than waiting for the cases to play out in the courts, they charged Trump with obstruction.

Due to their failure, Dems have been putting pressure on Senate Majority Leader McConnell (R-KY) to allow more witnesses, most notably John Bolton.

Everyone knew Senator Romney (R-UT) was going to go to the dark side but now Collins has openly stated she is going to do the same.

Collins stated, “[B]ut for the efforts that four of us made to ensure that vote would occur, that it’s unlikely that we would have had that opportunity. I am pleased that every senator will have the opportunity to vote on whether or not additional witnesses and documents are necessary.

“It is very likely that I’m going to conclude that yes, we do need to hear from witnesses.

“I, for one, believe that there’s some gaps, some ambiguities that need to be cleared up.”

Expect Fireworks

If the vote comes down in favor of the Democrats, which is still not a given, don’t expect the Democrats to be the only ones to get their way.

Several Republicans have already stated that if there are witnesses, they are going to go all out, calling both Joe and Hunter Biden, possibly Rep. Adam Schiff (D-CA), and there have been whispers of requesting the whistleblower to speak as well.

Schiff continues to say the Bidens are not relative witnesses, but there is now a big deal being made about a Washington Post piece about the Bidens and Burisma that was published several days before Trump’s phone, which would make the Bidens very relevant to the case.

Expect all of this to play out over the next two days. Once this question and answer period is over, votes will start to hit the floor, which is when all the fun begins.
