There are about to be sweeping changes in our Justice Department.
Biden’s acting Attorney General is reportedly having a conference call as early as today, where he will ask for everyone’s resignation.
Get Them Out of Here
It is pretty typical to gave changes in the Department of Justice after a new administration takes over, but this is a bit more than usual.
Trump changed over about 80 percent of Obama’s U.S. Attorney staff out of the gate, but Biden is going for a clean sweep.
According to reports, only one actual state U.S. Attorney will remain place, with Delaware’s U.S. Attorney being the sole survivor.
John Durham will also remain on as Special Counsel in the Russian origins probe, but he will be asked to resign as the U.S. Attorney for Connecticut.
Merrick Garland Confirmation
All this is happening under an acting AG because the confirmation of Merrick Garland as the Attorney General has been postponed.
Initially, his confirmation hearings were scheduled to begin on February 8, but that has now been pushed back for the impeachment trial of Donald Trump.
Senator Graham (R-S.C.) has been adamant that he will not simply rush through this appointment, mostly because he wants to make sure the current investigations that are taking place will not be ended once Garland comes into office.
Graham surely wants to get him on the record during his confirmation hearings to ensure this will be the case.
With the Senate rules now in place for the impeachment, it appears as though the Senate is targeting a conclusion of the trial inside of 10 days or so, then normal Senate business can resume.
